Sun Protection – Nine Different Sun Care Products Reviewed

(Not sponsored. No affiliate links.)

I can’t stress enough the importance of protecting skin from the UV radiation. Not only of cosmetic (anti-age) purposes, but rather health priority as both UVA and UVB rays damage skin cells’ DNA and can eventually cause skin cancer. Sun is the main source of UV radiation, but tanning beds and lamps carry no less guilt.

My rosacea or at least its gravity is (in my humble opinion) caused by prolonged sun exposure dating from the earliest childhood time. Nevertheless, mothers of that time collectively considered that all the best for the children came from the sun itself. Oh – my – god. No!

At present time, I wear my sunscreen all year round. No matter sun or rain, no matter in or outdoors.

Yes, I learned it the hard way the importance of protecting skin from the sun.

Not all the sun care products are created equal. There are two main groups:

  • Mineral (Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide) – sunblocks,
  • Organic (synthetic) – sunscreens, there are about 30 different ingredients of this kind but the most common include oxybenzone, octinoxate, octisalate, and avobenzone.

Labeling sunscreen as “waterproof” is no longer allowed, and all the sunscreens are considered merely filters that should be reapplied often enough.

Although mineral sunscreens are considered more appropriate for sensitive skin (rosacea skin in particular), my skin reacts better to synthetic sunscreens and had never any unwanted reaction caused by them.

I always use my sunscreen as the last step of the morning skin care routine. If I am outdoors, I reapply it every couple of hours or in summertime whenever I get wet (after swimming, or any sporting activity, yes I’m an outdoors gal).

Whenever I use actives (retinol, acids or vitamin C), even the night before, I always use SPF 50 in the morning, and then I can easily layer my BB cream, primer or any foundation no matter if they carry SPF or not. When I’m home, I use SPF 25 or 30 and reapply it only once during the day.

To reapply sunscreen when I wear makeup I use my SPF 50+ cushion foundations or simply use mists with SPF. No trouble at all.

Here are products that I like and currently use (click to page jump):

It is watery gel/cream of very light (almost not there) scent. It comes in cute 40g tube. Leaves no white cast and shine typical for some sunscreen products. Doesn’t affect skin tone. Very elegant on skin. Doesn’t break me out, but only con is that is slightly drying. But that’s me.

Indeed comfortable on skin. Very light, invisible, very easy to spread, excellent base for makeup. No white cast, no shine. Doesn’t affect skin tone. My skin loves it. Simple and easy to use.

It is white thin cream that comes in simple white 50 ml plastic tube. It has very strong alcohol scent but it dissipates rather quickly. That alcohol is actually the second ingredient of the ingredients list but it is not drying at all. I have no problem with alcohol in sunscreens. Its potentially drying effect to skin I compensate with good moisturizing base and problem solved.

I bought this cream when I searched for calendula products (my skin loves calendula/marigold). It is true, rich cream of rather strong scent characteristic to all calendula products. It leaves light white cast that goes away after few minutes. It is rather shiny on skin and I love, love it on my décolletage and neck. It makes skin there wrinkle free with beautiful natural glow. Talking about win win!

Face is little more demanding and needs more time to slurp all that shine. But it is rather nice cream and I love to use it.

It comes in yellow 50 ml plastic tube.

Tosowoong Makeon ChokChok Shining CC Cream SPF 50+ PA+++

Tosowoong Makeon Chokchok Shining CC Cream

What is it?

It’s colour correcting cream that fits in makeup section, but this one is well infused with potent sunscreens.

Although its formula looks white, when you spread on your face, the capsules in the formula burst and are absorbed into skin to turn your face naturally bright. So, this CC cream is available to any skin tone. CC cream alone not only brightens up your skin and improves wrinkles but also protects your skin from UV rays. So, it is very useful and convenient because you don’t need to additionally apply sunscreen. /Tosowoong/

How to use it?

After pumping, apply an appropriate amount to cheeks, forehead, nose and chin in order to spread its formula and rub on your face. Then, the color of its formula comes close to your skin color. When the capsules burst, the white creamy formula adjusts to your skin tone by itself. So, your face can look ‘naturally’ soft and shiny. /Tosowoong/

Ingredients

Purified water, Cyclopentasiloxane, Titanium Dioxide, Dipropylene Glycol, Zinc Oxide, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate. Trimethylsiloxysilicate, Hexyl Laurate, PEG-10 Dimethicone, Caprylyl Methicone, Cyclohexasiloxane, Cyclomethicone, Cetyl PEG/PPG-10/1 Dimethicone, Arbutin, Polysilsesauioxane, Disteardimonium Hectorite. CI 77491 Cl 77492, Ultramarines, Flavoring

Rosacea safe?

Yes

Who is it for?

All skin types

Does it work?

I still have occasional rows with this one. My goodness is it white! I need all the good cosmic forces and horoscopes to have on my side when I apply it. If I make one tiny little wrong move – it’s gone, it’s ruined. My face will look like white mask with red dry patches scattered around. But if I do everything right, oh, it’s simply chokchok! I won’t lie, this is so seldom…

So, here’s what I learned so far: never, ever apply it all at once. Tiny little layers. Many of them. Patience. Don’t breathe. Pray. And maybe you’ll get there. But don’t get your hopes up.

It comes in 30 ml plastic tube with airless pump applicator.

Thumbs up?

No, not really.

Rosacea safe?

Yes

Who is it for?

All skin types

Does it work?

I never use this powder as the only sun product on my face, but rather the elegant way to do the retouches throughout the day.

I love to use it when I’m at the beach. I apply my usual sunscreen and then set all with this one. Looks wonderful when skin gets wet.

It’s white on skin when applied thick but to minimize that unwanted skin tone changing, I use my other setting brush and then apply it in thin layers. Brush that comes with the product is rather rough on skin.

This little plastic pot contains only 2.5 grams of the powder.
