iUNIK Beta-Glucan Daily Moisture Cream Review

What is it?

Beta-Glucan is naturally occurring polysaccharide derived from yeast, oats or mushrooms. It is really a fibre in cell walls of oat kernel or mushroom body. There are some debates about the difference in its efficiency whether it is derived from oats, mushrooms, or even microorganisms but I couldn’t find the final answer to that question.

For a long time it was believed Beta-Glucan could only provide its benefits to human health by taking it orally as it could not penetrate skin because of its large molecular weight. Recently it is understood that it actually can penetrate the skin easily “as the water penetrates brick wall. It goes in deep through the inter-cellular lipid matrix, or the cells’ cement, to enter the lower levels of the skin.” /quotation: Dr. Mark Redmond, University of Alberta/

After Dr. Redmond and his team’s study had been published in International Journal of Cosmetic Science (13 September 2005), beta-glucan has become a star ingredient in many skin care products for its very promising anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidative and antiaging properties.

(…) Scientific reports indicate beta‐glucan is a film‐forming moisturizer, a biological response modifier, and a promoter of wound healing. Our objective was to study the penetration of oat (1,4:1,3) beta‐glucan in human skin models and to evaluate clinically its efficacy for reducing fine‐lines and wrinkles. Penetration studies performed on human abdominal skin used a single application of 0.5% beta‐glucan solution at a dose of 5 mg per cm2. The results showed that beta‐glucan, despite its large molecular size, deeply penetrated the skin into the epidermis and dermis. A clinical study of 27 subjects was performed to evaluate the effects of beta‐glucan on facial fine‐lines and wrinkles. After 8 weeks of treatment, digital image analysis of silicone replicas indicated a significant reduction of wrinkle depth and height, and overall roughness.”

Also called a moisturizer of the third generation (after glycerine and hyaluronic acid) Beta-Glucan is even more – a true skin helper.

When searched for skin care products rich with Beta-Glucan formulated for sensitive, aging skin like mine, I already have chosen one in particular: Graymelin Pure 100% Beta-Glucan. No other ingredients, just pure Beta-Glucan and it made wonders for my skin. You can see it in action here.

  1. This is a lovely find! I ran it through Cosdna and it has almost no acne triggers, very rare for rather rich, soothing and nourishing cremes.
