Breaking Down The Ordinary – The Mighty Ten Working Together

You are about to read The Ordinary article. The Ordinary became so accepted and so popular in beauty community that is impossible for one to miss it. Even if you wanted to. And there is one good reason for that – The Ordinary is nothing about the ordinary. It promises. It delivers.  Affordable as a bonus. What’s not to like? The Ordinary breaks down the blended, uniform picture of (important) skin care ingredients into mosaic, letting you create your own unique, custom tailored piece.  Instead of buying beauty products, you buy beauty ingredients and mix them your skin concerns accordingly.

So let’s start with the basics. The Ordinary is Canadian cruelty free brand under Deciem’s umbrella that keeps shaking the beauty world since 2013. They call their products “Clinical formulations with integrity”.

In my collection there are ten of The Ordinary products.

The Mighty Ten:

This article is about how I put the routines together and how well these products perform on my path to achieve the overall skin well-being.

Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 (30ml / 1fl.oz.)

HA

Ingredients

Aqua (Water), Sodium Hyaluronate, Pentylene Glycol, Propanediol, Sodium Hyaluronate Crosspolymer, Panthenol, Ahnfeltia Concinna Extract, Glycerin, Trisodium Ethylenediamine Disuccinate, Citric Acid, Isoceteth-20, Ethoxydiglycol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Hexylene Glycol, 1,2-Hexanediol, Phenoxyethanol, Caprylyl Glycol.

A water based serum with three forms of hyaluronic acid molecules with different molecular weight with purpose to hydrate skin in deeper skin layers without unwanted effect of drawing the water out of the skin.

It’s viscous, yellowish liquid with no scent. When applied to skin it absorbs quickly and leaves no tacky film on. That is if you use 3-4 drops of this product. If you use more, it will pill because skin obviously finds it too much to handle. Within 3-4 drops, it works fine, but unfortunately, I find it not hydrating enough. My skin needs more, so for hydration purpose I cannot use solely this serum. But, as the basic serum after cleansing and toning and followed with other products works just fine.

I also had negative reaction to this serum the first time I used it. Luckily, it subsided quickly. I used this serum again in a few days; my skin still didn’t find it useful. I cut back the use for additional two weeks and then used it again. It worked fine. My skin needed its time to get used to it.

Matrixyl 10% + HA (30ml / 1fl.oz.)

(For the full review click here)

I find this water based serum far more hydrating and skin plumping than the Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5. My favourite.

Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% (30ml / 1fl.oz.)

NMZn

Ingredients

Aqua (Water), Niacinamide, Pentylene Glycol, Zinc PCA, Dimethyl Isosorbide, Tamarindus Indica Seed Gum, Xanthan gum, Isoceteth-20, Ethoxydiglycol, Phenoxyethanol, Chlorphenesin.

Another hero in the army of water based serums. Combination of vitamin B3 (niacinamide) and mineral Zinc works great for me. The purpose of this serum is to reduce blemishes, redness and skin congestion. I can verify this. For me, this was the game changer. It really calms down the redness and works great for rosacea skin. If used too much (more than few drops) could pill.

It is viscous liquid of no scent or colour. It is recommended not to use it together with vitamin C formulas. Just use them at alternate routines.

This is my third bottle so far. Enough said.

Argireline Solution 10% (30ml / 1fl.oz.)

AS

Ingredients

Aqua (Water), Propanediol, Acetyl Hexapeptide-8, Trisodium Ethylenediamine Disuccinate, Gellan Gum, Sodium Chloride, Isoceteth-20, Ethoxydiglycol, Potassium Sorbate, Phenoxyethanol, Chlorphenesin.

This is one interesting water based serum. People also call it (although that is not quite right) “Botox in the bottle”. Argireline (Acetyl Hexapeptide-8) is Lipotec company patent.

It is watery liquid, no scent, no colour.

This serum works as the inhibitor of muscle movement. If the muscle is immobilized, thus no frowning and no wrinkles. This is the anti-wrinkle action of this serum. It doesn’t boost collagen or does anything like other skin repairing serums do. It simply corrects wrinkles formed by facial mimic. And I love how it performs. My forehead wrinkles are less visible and my left eyebrow that always had had tendency to reunite with my hairline is now in level with its sister. My “elevens” (wrinkles between the eyes) are smoother. I am no longer grumpy face. It took 5 weeks to kick in, though. However, I used it on my forehead and between the eyes only once a day, although the recommended usage is two times a day.

I am also on my third bottle of this serum.

EUK 134 0.1% (30ml / 1fl.oz.)

EUK

Ingredients

Propanediol, Ethylbisiminomethylguaiacol manganese chloride.

All right, impossible to pronounce the full name of this wonderful antioxidant serum. But it works. Works great as the anti-aging serum. It fights free radicals and protects skin from the external aggressors and photo-aging.

It is brownish, viscous, oily (although it is not oil nor does it contains) liquid. Sinks into skin quickly and leaves skin soft and protected.

After 5 weeks of usage, my skin is, to put it simply – better. It is more resilient, stronger, and not so sensitive to external factors anymore.

It shouldn’t be used together with highly acidic formulations.

Natural Moisturizing Factors + HA (30ml / 1fl.oz.)

NMF

Ingredients

Aqua (Water), Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Cetyl Alcohol, Propanediol, Stearyl Alcohol, Glycerin, Sodium Hyaluronate, Arginine, Aspartic Acid, Glycine, Alanine, Serine, Valine, Isoleucine, Proline, Threonine, Histidine, Phenylalanine, Glucose, Maltose, Fructose, Trehalose, Sodium PCA, PCA, Sodium Lactate, Urea, Allantoin, Linoleic Acid, Oleic Acid, Phytosteryl Canola Glycerides, Palmitic Acid, Stearic Acid, Lecithin, Triolein, Tocopherol, Carbomer, Isoceteth-20, Polysorbate 60, Sodium Chloride, Citric Acid, Trisodium Ethylenediamine Disuccinate, Pentylene Glycol, Triethanolamine, Sodium Hydroxide, Phenoxyethanol, Chlorphenesin.

Surface hydration cream type formula. Very moisturizing but not greasy at all. Very powerful and very efficient hydrating mix of ingredients.

NMF2

It is white cream with no scent.

I love it. This is one of my favourite moisturizers. A little goes a long way so this 30 ml tube isn’t so little. It doesn’t irritate skin nor aggravate rosacea. It does just the opposite.

Azelaic Acid Suspension 10% (30ml / 1fl.oz.)

AAS

Ingredients

Aqua (Water), Isodecyl Neopentanoate, Dimethicone, Azelaic Acid, Dimethicone/Bis-Isobutyl PPG-20 Crosspolymer, Dimethyl Isosorbide, Hydroxyethyl Acrylate/Sodium Acryloyldimethyl Taurate Copolymer, Polysilicone-11, Isohexadecane, Tocopherol, Trisodium Ethylenediamine Disuccinate, Isoceteth-20, Polysorbate 60, Triethanolamine, Ethoxydiglycol, Phenoxyethanol, Chlorphenesin.

Azelaic Acid is indicated to rosacea as it helps reduce inflammation and flare-ups. It reduces blemishes and evens skin tone. This is nice gel like suspension, but for more serious types of rosacea, I must say the concentration of 10% is not enough. This suspension is nice addition to every day skin care, but cannot be the substitute for prescribed azelaic acid concentrations.

AA

It would be a great primer, only if it wouldn’t pill so bad when used with some sunscreen formulas.

I used up three tubes of this product.

Granactive Retinoid 2% in Squalane (30ml / 1fl.oz.)

GR2

Ingredients

Squalane, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Bisabolol, Dimethyl Isosorbide, Hydroxypinacolone Retinoate, Solanum Lycopersicum (Tomato) Fruit Extract, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil.

My skin loves vitamin A forms in skin care. Including this Granactive Retionoid. This oily, active mix replenishes, re-textures, and enhances skin appearance. Excellent anti-aging as well as anti-inflammation product. It is not irritating at all. I had zero dry skin patches when using this retinoid type of product.

It is oily, yellowish liquid with no scent.

Very moisturizing due to squalane and jojoba oil and works great as the last step of the skin care routine.

It does increase skin UV sensitivity, though. So sunscreen, no matter weather outside is a must. Also, this is not suitable if pregnant or breastfeeding.

100% Plant-Derived Squalane (30ml / 1fl.oz.)

PDS3

Ingredients

Squalane

I first bought Granactive Retinoid 2% in Squalane and I was so impressed with the effect on my skin so I had to buy Squalane alone. And I am glad I did. So versatile, so nice and you can use it with anything to increase moisturizing effect and reduce possible irritations. Smooths out the skin and immediately makes it look younger. Not heavy, absorbs very easily into skin.

Not an oil, but oily texture transparent liquid with no scent.

Soothing, moisturizing, great.

100% Organic Cold-Pressed Rose Hip Seed Oil (30ml / 1fl.oz.)

RoseHip

Ingredients

Rosa Canina Seed Oil

Rose Hip Seed Oil has many benefits to skin. It enhances skin texture and evens skin tone. Works great reducing PIE (post inflammatory erythema). Although there are many claims that it reduces skin scarring, I cannot verify this with 100% certainty. Not that it isn’t efficient, but merely because I use many topical keratolytics, that is impossible to say which one in particular is responsible for reducing scarring action.

It is oil of vivid-yellow colour with characteristic rose hip, fruity scent.

It is very moisturizing, but not heavy.

 Conclusion

The Mighty Ten are the staples of my skin care routines. My hyper-sensitive, rosacea inflicted, aging skin is enjoying these formulations. The very idea of creating skin care products that can target the universal, yet very specific skin concerns is revolutionary from my point of view. Why? Everyone has own, unique skin, with own, unique concerns and/or problems, hence universal skin care product with 100% effect on everyone’s skin equally is not the reality. It seems that Deciem was first one to understand that and let you grasp the benefit of the choice.
